Enterprise AI Model Governance on Azure

Bringing AI model sprawl under enterprise control.

A custom Azure-based LLMOps platform developed for a private equity firm to organise model usage across engineering projects through a managed endpoint gateway, model registry and discoverable catalogue.

The challenge

As engineering teams introduce AI into different projects, model access can become fragmented. Individual applications establish their own integrations, while the organisation loses a consistent view of which models are available and how teams are using them.

The client needed to rein in this AI sprawl without preventing its engineering teams from building. The objective was to create a shared operating layer: a place to discover models, register their use and route access through managed endpoints rather than allowing every project to maintain an independent model-access pattern.

02

The solution

The work delivered a custom LLMOps platform on Azure, bringing together a model registry, discoverability and catalogue capabilities with a managed endpoint gateway.

The registry created a structured place to organise the model estate. The catalogue made that information usable for engineers looking for an approved model or existing capability. The gateway provided a managed access point between applications and model services, giving the organisation a place to apply access and operating policies consistently.

This separates the developer's application integration from the details of the underlying model service. Instead of treating every new AI project as a separate infrastructure decision, teams can work through a common platform while the organisation manages the model estate as a shared capability.

Technical architecture

01

Model registry

structured records describing the available models and deployments.

02

Discoverability and catalogue

an engineering-facing interface for finding and understanding model options.

03

Managed endpoint gateway

a common access boundary for application model requests.

04

Policy and lifecycle boundary

a place to organise access decisions and changes to the model estate.

05

Cloud foundation

an Azure-based deployment connecting the platform's services.

Why the gateway and registry belong together

A gateway without a catalogue can centralise traffic while leaving teams unsure which service to use. A catalogue without managed access can describe the model estate while applications continue to bypass it. Connecting the two brings engineering discovery and platform control into the same workflow.

A further operating consideration is distinguishing a model family from a deployment and its configuration. Catalogue discoverability should not hide the version, access arrangement or service dependency that an application actually relies on.

What the work enabled

The platform gave the firm a central structure for managing model access and discoverability across its engineering initiatives. It addressed AI sprawl as a platform and governance problem, with a custom-built operating layer around the organisation's AI usage.
